In This IssueWELCOMEHigh or Low Tech You probably know by now that you can access Cabin Life content in a variety of ways, including print and digital versions of the magazine, our website at www.CabinLife.com, and our e-newsletter. Each format has its own flavor. I am reminded, though, that cabins and technology can be strange bedfellows, and with mixed results. On the one hand, technology can enhance your cabin living. Who would argue that a remote-control, motorized boat lift is not an improvement over cranking the big wheel ’round and ’round? And when your friends are driving to your remote cabin for the first time, isn’t it comforting to know they have GPS to guide them? But sometimes, we are better off unplugging. A few of my friends learned this the hard…2 min
From the DeckYellow WarblerPlease, a tip of the cap to the common willow. This great tree’s fast-growing roots control erosion, and its wood can be turned into lovely baskets. Salicylic acid, the main ingredient in aspirin, was discovered in its bark. And it thrives just about everywhere. Better yet, no matter where you find willows, you’re likely also to discover the Yellow Warbler, the most dazzling member of a guild of birds that share a fondness for willows and the water that the trees often stand alongside. The Yellow Warbler is compact and short-tailed, as warblers go, and aptly named, since it’s hands-down our yellowest bird. Except for dark, beady eyes and handsome, brick-red streaks on the breast, it glows like morning sunshine above and below, from head to tail. Even its song…2 min
From the DeckExternal Sprinkler SystemsAcross the nation, wildfires occur regularly. They are often considered part of the natural cycle – nature’s regeneration of plant and tree life. However, at the urban-wildland interface, wildfires also have been known to reduce dreams and cherished possessions to ashes. Nearly every state has experienced wildfire in the last century. In 1993, a wildfire devoured 14,000 acres of land and ignited 440 homes north of Laguna Beach, Calif. In nearby Mystic Hills, 286 homes were totally destroyed. Then, in May 2007, a wildfire overtook numerous homes and cabins in Minnesota’s Arrowhead region. However, these two wildfire stories also include tales of survival. In the Mystic Hills neighborhood of that ‘93 California fire, one white house was left standing amidst the smoking ashes of its neighboring homes. In the ‘07…2 min
From the DeckMAILBOXA FISHING TRADITION Dear Cabin Life, Our family cabin season in northern Ontario always begins with the infamous “May Trip.” The tradition was started by my late husband and our seven sons. For five days in May, they are on the hunt for the BFOT (Big Fish of Trip) catch. After my husband passed away, the boys commemorated this family tradition with a May Trip trophy, insisting I take his place. Now, all seven of them make the trip from the Chicago area to the Canada cabin. The winner takes home the huge trophy for the year with a smaller replica to keep. He also gets his name and winning stats engraved on a plaque that stays at the cabin. At the end of the trip, there is a ceremony…1 min
