What I Personally Think GW3 should look like

Gonna be honest, VR becoming an actual mainstream media model and not just a gimmick genuinely terrifies me. Haven't there been enough dystopian sci-fi movies to warn against this?
Plus I like being able to see my characters.
Good point, I prefer third person RPGs, too, but I’m also attracted to the lure of the possible immersion. I don’t suppose a third person viewpoint couldn’t be done in VR, with the user as a disembodied camera outside the character like we have now.
As to sci-fiwarnings, I wasn’t thinking completely immersive VR that’s indistinguishable from reality, just good enough to be a comfortable, immersive experience for most.
Sci-fidid warnus about large screens on the walls of our living rooms with fake characters we came to view as our friends, but we’ve been living with that for a while and the consequences have only been moderatelyterrible for society. So maybe that next step intoVR won’t be toobad. 😄

Not entirely right. Every gen1 legendary later on got legendary journeys. But only the first 4 in gen2 got the journeys before anet declared it was not cost effective.
Thanks, my post kept getting long so I was trying to resist too much detail. The arc is there.

In my experience, sticking to ranged on Mirage still feels slow to kill, but it's really easy to survive with axe/pistol too, and you can keep the staff for if things do get a little hairy.
Condi shortbow renegade is pure ridiculousness.

Maybe Aurene's healing magic won't be complete until it is fully matured by absorbing the last sphere of magic with the death of Bubbles.🤷♀️It's amazing what you can justify with fantasy logic and magico-technobabble. Wibbley wobbley, timey wimey and all that.

Gathering tools and home instance nodes provide convenience. The cost is more of side effect. For waypoint cost the cost is the only thing it provides.
Yes, exactly.

Also it's not something taking up bag space or having to run to a vendor for, unlike permanent gathering tools which replace things that occupy space. It's not something I would spend gems on.
This hits the nail on the head. The other convenience items sold in the gem store offer a trade off. They don't make economic sense, but they do smooth out an inconvenience in the game.
Much cheaper to buy new gathering tools for a long time than to buy an infinite tool, but always having to keep them in stock is a minor irritation, so people opt for the infinite.
Since WP fees are just quietly deducted from your bank, there's no inconvenience to get around by throwing money at it.

Hm, lots of confusion. Maybe the post above mine was clearer, as it did point to the same thing.
Infinite gathering tools and home instance nodes, for example, are priced such that it would take years of in game use for them to "pay for themselves" so to speak.
Apply that to a Waypoint Pass, and if you wanted to simulate it with gems-gold, you'd have to lock up a very large amount of gold for exclusive WP usage in order to get the same effect.

So.. like... just buy some gems, convert to gold, and then you've got the gold to pay for waypoints purchased with gems - your very own waypoint pass.
Although that doesn't tend to be how the gem store things work. In your version, you'd only end up paying for what you actually use. Many gemstore conveniences cost way more in gold than the gold they save you from having to pay in game.
In order to properly simulate how a waypoint pass would most likely be implemented, one would have to convert enough gems to gold to coveryearsof waypointing, and make sure never to use that gold for anything else.

It's undergoing tests. And last I read, it was balancing according to how much players played WvW in the past, though they've said they'd like to integrate other metrics once the system is working as they'd like. I believe typical play time of day was mentioned as a possiblity.
What part of the world are you playing in? These would hardly be peak hours in NA.

How excited are you for EoD compared to HoT and PoF?
in End of Dragons Discussion (Archived)
Posted January 14, 2022· Edited by Gibson.4036
Well, I left the game shortly after Heart of Thorns launched due to some directions it was going. I didn't come back until after PoF launched. So, I had zero excitement for the launch of either, though I've enjoyed both immensely when I came back to the game.
As for EoD, I'm not excited the way I'd be to play the FFXVII remake if the PC port gets fixedor a new Elder Scrolls.
But I am excited about:
*New story to play
*New zones to explore
*Making my first legendary weapon
*Spectre depending on where its design lands

I've enjoyed Braham. Yeah, he got really annoying there for a bit, but it quickly became clear that was because he was supposed to be annoying.
Honestly, after replaying season 2 and 3, I'm more annoyed with Caithe. Her apologies were terrible. Later, sharing Aurene's champion role with herwas a really odd choice.
Hearing some of the writers in the live stream talk about the history and motivations of some of the major NPCs has given me enough confidence that EoD story will be fine. I'm not looking for amazing writingin my MMO. At the moment, I've got Jeff Vandermeer for amazing writing, and GW2 forbig, brassy adventure, magicotechnobabble, and occasionally funny dialogue.

Skyscale Quest Fix Request
in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Things like scales/medicine/eggs are part of every MMO because no team of developers can make enough content to meaningfully occupy players over the course of years.
You have a limited amount of developer hours, so you can't make a deep involved quest for this whole process. Will you cut a bunch out, potentially leaving players to feel like this once-per-account activity was way too short and insignificant? Will you leave them looking for something else to do for the hours that you removed from the process?
There's clearly a desire on the team's part to create meaningful ways to get significant rewards. There's visiting several dozens spots on Dragonfall to get your skyscale, but there's also getting it a ball to play with and playing hide and seek. There's identifying places that exemplify various phobias so you can collect fear based magic. But at some point, content hasto be stretched to make finite development time intersect with almost infinite player play time.
Haven't legendary weapons illustrated this clearly over the lfe of the game? First generation was RNG precursor drops. Second generation ArenaNet explored making lore-rich collections so that there was a meaningful journey involved, then openly told us it took way too much development time for each individual weapon. Now they're experimenting with a full set of one style of legendary weapons that can then be transformed into other looks in order to try and increase return on investment.
You want the skyscale journey to be more meaningful along its entire path? What other things in the game should lose their alloted development time for that to happen?

Side note, the thread title doesn't seem to reflect the OP's content. "GW2's Marketing is it's Worst Enemy" would probably be better.
And "Do better" always comes across to me as an incredbily arrogant way to address someone.

Purely anecdotally (but what else do any of us here on the forums have to go on?), I feel like I'm seeing more new players and returning players than I have in a long time.
I've run across many new players in game, and the general vibe I get from talking to them is "I'm so glad I discovered this game".
I've also noticed a significant uptick in forum threads that are started by new players. Admittedly, a good amount of those threads are "why isn't this more lik the MMOs I'm used to?" posts, so they may not say great things about retention, but the game is getting new players. And a few of those players who start a rant thread actually end up sounding like they are jumping back in to give the game another try by the time several helpful players respond with advice or explanations about the game.
As I said, anecdote. And I've seen the "my friends won't come try this game no matter how much I try to get them to" posts, so people can throw anecdotes on the other side of the scales.
But my perception is that we actually have had an influx of new players recently.

They really should dump all the useless boosts and random identity repair kits and skinsthey cram into the premium editions, and just make those editions "includes prior living story!" Not only would it make for a straightforward way to make sure you got all the content, it'd be a really clearsignal that you aren't getting it if you buy the base version.

Can you stop asking for deep masteries on achievements?
in Guild Wars 2 Discussion
Posted January 13, 2022
One of the things that took me a long time to discover was that HoT adventures give mastery points. I tended to avoid adventures after failing at one repeatedly early on, but eventually dailies lead me to try them again. I discovered that some are not hard at all, and many only take a few repetitions to get the hang of their mechanics. I was surprised by the sudden influx of MPs I was getting.

None I have not done the return to stuff I simply dont have the time in my play schedule.
You know your schedule, so I'm not attempting to talk you out of it, but I am curious if you've overestimated how much time the return events take.
I'm a dedicated but casual player compared to many, but I completed it. Each week's meta-achievement took me a 2-3 hour session to knock out, sometimes followed up by another 1 hour session or so.
One thing to note is that you don't have to do the entire story. If you've already completed a chapter, there are specific instances that are needed, and you can skip a lot of the story instances and running around the world in between. You just head to the purple star for the one you need, in any order. There are also several multi-part missions that span different instances, and I found you get credit if you only do the last instance of that mission.
Finally, to get the precursor, you only have to get to tier 2 in the Season of Dragons meta-achievement. That means you only have to complete 10 of the 23 weeks of Living world Return.

They really do need to let some of these masteries work in other zones. SO many masteries are limited to 1 or 2 maps when it takes a lot of exp to even get them.
It has trained me to eye every new mastery and gauge whether it will be obsolete in future content. I don't expect this is an intended result on the part of the developers.
The answer, it seems to me, is to make sure there are ways to use past masteries in future zones that are unnecessary but profitable. No player should feel they have to go back and get previous masteries in order to participate in the story or the meta for a zone, but they should feel like it'd be rewarding if they did.
If ANet could find that delicate balance, the game would be stronger for it.
